The Mid Atlantic Brown Swiss calf sale started out with a bang, as the lead off calf sold for $10,000. Bidding was fast and furious on this exceptional, stylish, and very correct September calf. Selling first and topping the event at $10,000, was Dublin Hills Tootie, a September 4, 2007 calf sired by Old Mill B Turmoil, out of a show winning pedigree. The dam was Burnt Mills P Dot Di OCS ET “2E-91” with over 38,000m. The Grandam was Smith Mead Blend Diana, and compiled a list of show winnings. This fancy calf took the eye of many, but the final bid went to the Tootie Syndicate, Middletown, MD. The “Tootie Syndicate” is Bonnie and Tom Remsberg, Ron Heffner, and Douglas King, Middletown, MD. The contending bidder was George William Smith, Thurmont, MD. Look for “Tootie” on the tanbark trail later this year.
The second high seller was of the day was Old Mill PT Dandy ET, at $6400, a well grown, and straight-lined heifer that already had a first place win at the New York Spring show in the winter calf class. She is sired by Top Acres Protype ET. The dam, Old Mill P Delottie “3E-92”has been Grand Champion, and also a Total Performance Winner. A solid pedigree with lots of show potential. The consignor was Allen Bassler, Upperville, VA., and the buyer was Jimmy and Ginny Franks, Waynesboro, GA.
The third high selling calf was Blessing Starsky Maddie, a long, tall, and dairy summer yearling consigned by Blessing Farm, Ft. Wayne, IN. The granddam, Hoosier Knoll Megan has several All American credits, and Maddie is sired by Old Mill TA Starsky. She was purchased by Elizabeth Byers, West Lafayette, IN. for $4700.
Staying in the elite group of calves, and selling as the fourth high seller was Round Hill Solution Fever, a super dairy and stylish summer yearling out of the Top Acres Emory Falicia family. Fever is sired by Old Mill C Solution, and the dam is Top Acres Denver Flora ET, third place Futurity winner at the 2007 Maryland State Fair. This heifer has lots of type, and potential. She was the purchase of Dennis Smith, Woodsboro, MD. for $3550, and she was the consignment of Cindy Warner, Frederick, MD.
The quality of consignments merited good prices throughout the sale, as there were three more calves selling for $3500. Dennis Smith said, “People know we get the kind of calves that go on to do well for the owner, and this sale is where they can get a good one. We congratulate and commend the consignors for sending such outstanding animals to the sale each year.”
There were buyers from 10 different states. The sale averaged $2576 on 33 head, and 1 bull sold for $1750.
Denny Remsburg was the auctioneer for the sale, while Wayne Sliker read pedigrees. Brown Swiss members, and junior members were instrumental in helping in the barn, and on sale day. The animals were very well prepared by Peter Velisek and Darin Sentelle. Ringmen this year were Norman Hill and Bobby Valentine. It was a great team effort with the help from members in the Maryland Brown Swiss association. The 2008 sale was dedicated to Bill Warner, Cindy’s husband who passed away suddenly on December 29, 2007.
