Brown Swiss Calves Sell Well In Maryland

Frederick, MD.--  A sunny day, a great crowd, and an excellent line-up of “typey, quality calves—“the trademark of the Mid Atlantic calf sale”, was the setting for the 33rd annual sale held recently at the Frederick Fairground, Frederick, MD.  Another successful chapter was written in sale history as 32 animals paraded through the sale ring for an average of $2680. “Considering the economic times in the dairy industry, we believe this was another great sale, as consignors and buyers were very happy with the results,” said Dennis Smith, one of the sale managers.  This popular sale has gained quite a track record for show quality animals, Bell Ringers, and even All American nominations and winners.

“The demand for Swiss continues here on the east coast, as we saw a lot of repeat buyers, but also had several new buyers,” said Cindy Warner, sale manager.  She commented that there were buyers from nine different states, as well as a buyer from Switzerland participating in this year’s sale.  “The sale had exceptional quality all the way through, both type-wise, and pedigree- wise, and there is a great offering for the all types of buyers”, said Warner.

Topping the sale at $6500 with brisk bidding was Blessing Parker Fanny ET, a December calf with lots of quality throughout, and will be a hi-level contender at the 2007 shows.  Extremely well balanced, Fanny is out of a great maternal line.  Her dam, We-Gotta Jetway Fancy was All American Fall Yearling in 1997, All American SR. 2-year-old in 1998, and many more class winnings in her pedigree over the years.  And she is backed by four generations of Excellent dams with high production.  Her sire is the popular Brothers Three Parker, an Ensign son out of Top Acres Coll Party. She was the consignment of Blessing Farms, Ft. Wayne, IN., and she was purchased by A.J. Bassler, Upperville, VA. Contending bidder on this great calf was Glad Ray Farm, and Kathy Whitman, Thurmont, MD.

There were two consignments meriting the second high selling animals of the sale at $6000 each.  Top Acres Premium Steps ET was a really nice, well grown, strong September calf from five generations of Excellent dams from the famous Snowstorm family who sold for $6000 to I & M Associates, Centreville, MD.  Steps dam is EX- 91, Top Acres Collect Storm ET, and she is sired by the popular Top Acres EP Premium bull. Over 90 All American nominations have come from this family.  She was the consignment of Wayne Sliker, St. Paris, OH.

The other animal selling for $6000 was the consignment of Dennis Smith, Woodsboro, MD.  Dublin Hills Suellen caught the attention of many as the bidding got very active on this tall, correct, and long stylish September calf.  She is sired by the popular Old Mill B Turmoil, a Banker son out of Old Mill E Snickerdoodle.  Commanding the final bid was Greg Clark, Cornish Flats, NH.

Selling as the third high calf was Fair Hill Jolt Poppy ET at $5400.  She was a well grown, deep bodied calf with style, and also has potential index with a parent average of  +1363m  +45f  +36p  +284 NM$.  She is a Hilltop Acres Jolt out of Sun-Made Gar Bro Poppy “3E-92”, and the Granddam is Top Acres Present, and backed by generations of Superior Brood cows. She was the consignment of Fair Hill Farm, Chestertown, MD., and she was purchased by David Cowles, Roberts, WI.

Staying in this elite group of calves, and selling for $3800 was the consignment of Jeff Wolfe, Gettysburg, PA.  This outstanding, well grown March calf was sired by R-Hart Simon Ensign ET, and out of Round Hill Mist Rockie, “2E-91”.  The granddam is VG-88, and the next dam is Ingleside Babaray Piper, “EX-92” and the All American 4-year-old in 1994.  The new owner is Jenna Smith, Martinsburg, PA.

The fifth high selling animal, Wind Mill Starbuck Cream ET, sold for $3700, and was the consignment of Andrew Daubert, Pine Grove, PA.  This exceptionally well balanced, correct dairy calf is sired by Mort Jade Starbuck, and out of Lo Vi Em Camay, “VG-89”, and is the full sister to the famous Old Mill E Snickerdoodle.  Cream writes a great pedigree with a lot of potential to make the great ones.  She was purchased by Dave Kulp, Manheim, PA. and Dennis Smith, Woodsboro, MD.

The quality of consignments merited good prices throughout the sale.  Dennis Smith said, “People know we get the kind of calves that go on to do well for the owner, and this sale is where they know they can get a good one.”

Another successful part of the sale is the offering of outstanding embryo packages featuring genetics from breed leading cow families.  The high selling embryo package was the offering of five Blessing Banker Agenda embryos from Old Mill E Snickerdoodle.  They were the purchase of Jeff Wolfe, Gettysburg, PA. with a contending bidder of Adrian Zucher of Switzerland.  They were consigned by Allen and Tammy Bassler, Upperville, VA.   The second high package was for three embryos from a mutually agreeable sire out of Lo Vi Emory Camay, who is the full sister to Snickerdoodle.  Adrian Zucher of Switzerland was the successful bidder at $850 each, and they were the consignment of Tim Navis, Brandon, WI.  Third high selling package was three sexed semen Red Brae Prelude Zeus embryos from Fair Hill Ensign Please, out of the Reserve All American Jr. 2-year-old, Sun Made Pilot Pleasure, “VG-89”. They were purchased by Daryl Mason, Calloway, VA., and consigned by Fair Hill Farm, Chestertown, MD.

All calves sold are automatically entered in the Mid Atlantic Brown Swiss Futurity with the first payment made by the Maryland Brown Swiss Association.  The fourteenth Futurity will be held on Sunday, August 26, 2007 during the Maryland State fair in Timonium, Maryland with Wayne Sliker of Ohio doing the judging.  All breeders are welcome, and animals are now being accepted for the 2009 Futurity.  For more information, contact Cindy Warner, 301-371-5206.

The Swiss juniors helped around the ring, and in the barn preparing the calves, and they also helped to present the calves in the sale ring.  Ringmen were Bobby Valentine and Jimmy Hill.  The animals were very well fitted by Andrew Lenhart and Mark Valentine.

It was a great team effort with many members from the Maryland Brown Swiss association helping with all duties associated with hosting this annual spring sale.  Denny Remsburg was the auctioneer, and Wayne Sliker read pedigrees.

The sale is sponsored by the Maryland Brown Swiss Association and will be held next year on Saturday, April 26,2008 at the Frederick Fairgrounds—Be A Winner—Buy A Winner!!
